George & Theresa Olsen
I have been creatively turning wood since 2004. From the first I enjoyed discovering what was inside a particular piece of wood, and what I could create with it. I joined clubs and read many books and articles and made a lot of wood chips. As my skill increased I enjoyed it more…but whatever would we do with all the turned pieces?
With my wife Theresa’s and friend Claudine’s and others’ encouragement I began to enter shows, and found a market for my wood. Artist guilds also welcomed my pieces. Problem solved! I could experiment with different varieties and new tools, some of which I developed. The single lathe soon had others to join it. Theresa began to learn to turn as well as handle the business end.
I typically create useful pieces that have a uniqueness about them. Each item’s wood dictates it’s final shape. The majority of the wood used comes from the Catskill region.
I have become known particularly for pepper and salt mills as well as coffee mills that work well and are esthetically pleasing. Each pepper mill and coffee mill is adjustable, and each salt mill is made with a ceramic mechanism. Some mills feature Crush Grind® mechanisms that can be used for salt, pepper, or spices. The Color Swirl Mills, turned of dyed laminated birch, add a splash of color to your kitchen! Combination mills have a salt shaker in the top and pepper mill on the bottom of the same mill. Mills and utensils are found in guilds in Upstate New York and Vermont. All mills carry a warranty. Each mill is created by us in our studio near Richmondville, NY.
