Mike Bernhard plies his trade in Afton, New York, where his hillside farm includes a mixed hardwood woodlot. He logs this forest to maintain its health and productivity. Local self-employed sawyers mill the boards and planks, which are dried by sun and wind and time, not in electric kilns.

His designs are shaped by the woods he works with and by his admiration of the Arts & Crafts (or Mission) style. Bernhard uses all-wood construction (no composites) and low-tech finishes that pollute neither his shop nor his customers' homes. Bernhard offers his own line of Susquehanna Oak furniture, made in small production runs to keep his prices low. He also welcomes custom work in other woods and other styles.
